"De Molen" News
March 2007

The mill continues to perform well. On February 16 we passed the three million revolutions since opening on April 13, 2003. According to our "molen-friends" in Holland, this is quite remarkable, seldom achieved by mills still in operation, and as a result published in the March 2007 issue of the trade magazine "De Molen Wereld". Operational windmills in Holland receive an annual government subsidy based on the number of revolutions. Shame we cannot get the same support here! However due to a substantially increased addition of a range of Dutch foodstuffs and souvenirs to our range, we manage to maintain our turnover. We have a substantial financial reserve, but the day for major maintenance work will arrive soon, involving some significant costs that cannot be met from our regular, daily income.
We need to increase our income and we hope with other developments to the site we are situated on, this may be achieved. This site, already has other attractions:

  • a cafe with public toilets, called "The Tramstation", featuring a real horsedrawn tram for rides on Sunday afternoons,
  • a Flaxstripper museum recalling one of Foxton's past major industries,
  • a Maori arts and crafts centre and
  • a display of mural paintings, featuring historic Foxton.

Plans to establish a Dutch Heritage Museum adjacent to the same area are as yet, not definite, but look promising. We hope all this will make a visit to De Molen more attractive and worthwile and thus increase our income.

Upcoming events and noteworthy facts:

  • The Foxton Easter Fair, Sunday April 8.
  • Our 4th birthday on April 13 and
  • Our AGM on August 9, 2007,
Venue Foxton Memorial Hall Stewart Ellwood room, all our foundation members will be advised by letter.

De Molen is largely dependent on a rapidly aging band of enthusiastic volunteers to run the retail shop or/and act as relieving-millers during weekends and holidays. Both are fascinating occupations with opportunities to meet people from all over the world!
So any young and fit retirees among our web-visitors, should you be interested in becoming a miller or assist in our shop, please contact us at demolenfoxton@xtra.co.nz
